A hose knocks off leaves and loose dirt. It does not touch the calcium scale plated onto your pleats, and it does not touch the sunscreen and body oils soaked into the fabric. Those are the two things actually restricting your filter, and neither one comes off with water pressure.
That is why a cartridge you rinsed last month can look clean and still be running at half its rated flow.

HOW TO ACTUALLY CLEAN A POOL CARTRIDGE FILTER
A quick hose-down isn’t a professional pool filter cleaning.
At Stay Fresh Pools, filter maintenance is preventative maintenance. A properly cleaned cartridge filter helps maintain strong water flow, improves filtration, reduces unnecessary strain on your pump, and gives us an opportunity to inspect one of the hardest-working pieces of your swimming pool equipment.

1. SHUT IT DOWN SAFELY
Turn the pool equipment OFF.
Open the filter’s air-relief valve and remove the drain plug to completely relieve pressure and drain the filter tank.
Never attempt to open a pressurized pool filter.
2. OPEN + INSPECT
Remove the filter band clamp and lid, then carefully pull the cartridge filters.
Before cleaning anything, inspect the cartridges and filter components for:
- Torn or damaged pleats
- Cracked end caps
- Collapsed cartridges
- Damaged bands
- Excessive scaling or staining
- Worn O-rings
- Cracks or damage to the filter tank or internal components
Sometimes the right answer isn’t another cleaning—it’s replacement.
3. CLEAN THE CARTRIDGES
Using a standard garden hose and controlled water pressure, clean each cartridge thoroughly.
Work top to bottom, opening the pleats as you go so water can flush dirt, debris, oils, and buildup from deep inside the filter media.
Take your time.
That dirt buried between the pleats is exactly what restricts water flow and increases filter pressure.
4. NO PRESSURE WASHER 🚫
More pressure does not mean more clean.
A pressure washer can damage the filter media, separate or shred the pleats, and shorten the life of your cartridges.
Controlled water. Thorough technique. Better results.
5. WE DON’T ACID SOAK CARTRIDGES
If a cartridge has reached the point where someone believes it needs to be soaked in muriatic acid to restore performance, we recommend replacing it.
At Stay Fresh Pools, we’re not interested in forcing a little more life out of compromised filter media.
New cartridges restore proper filtration capacity and give your pool equipment a fresh start.

6. CLEAN THE FILTER TANK
A filter cleaning isn’t complete when the cartridges are clean.
Clean debris and buildup from the filter base, tank, drain area, and internal components before reinstalling the cartridges.
Clean cartridges inside a dirty filter tank?
That ain’t fresh.
7. REASSEMBLE IT CORRECTLY
Reinstall the cartridges and verify everything is properly seated.
Inspect and reinstall the lid, pressure gauge, O-ring, drain plug, and band clamp.
Proper filter reassembly matters. This is a pressurized piece of swimming pool equipment—not something to guess on.
8. PRIME + BLEED THE AIR
Keep the air-relief valve open and turn the pool system back on.
Allow the pump to prime and air to escape from the filter.
Once you have a steady stream of water, close the air-relief valve.
9. FINAL EQUIPMENT CHECK
Before leaving the system:
✓ Check the filter for leaks
✓ Verify normal operating pressure
✓ Confirm proper water flow
✓ Inspect the pump and surrounding equipment
✓ Make sure the entire system is operating correctly

It’s not fresh if it ain’t Stay Fresh.
DE Filters: Backwashing Is Not Cleaning
Backwashing flushes out DE and some debris. That is it. The grids underneath are still carrying oil and scale.
DE filters need a full breakdown at least twice a year here. Tank comes apart, grids come out, each one gets inspected, soaked, and rinsed, manifold gets checked, o-rings get looked at, then it goes back together and gets recharged with the right amount of DE.
If nobody has broken your DE filter down in two years, it is not filtering the way you think it is, and there is a decent chance we find a torn grid when we open it. That is a repair conversation, and we will tell you before we do anything.
Sand Filters
Backwash as needed. That is genuinely most of it.
But sand does not last forever. It channels, it clumps, and it rounds off, and after three to five years it is not filtering. There is no soak that fixes old sand. It gets replaced.
How Often, in This Climate
Forget what the manual says. The manual was written for a pool that shuts down for five months a year.
- Cartridge: every three to four months
- DE: full breakdown twice a year, minimum
- Sand: backwash as needed, new sand every three to five years
But the calendar is the backup answer. The gauge is the real one. Clean it when your pressure reads 8 to 10 PSI above your clean baseline.
If you do not know your baseline, that is not your fault, almost nobody has been given it. It is the pressure your filter reads right after a proper cleaning, and it is the only number that tells you when the next one is due. We write it on the filter and hand it to you. It is the difference between maintaining a filter and reacting to one.
WHY YOUR POOL FILTER WORKS HARDER IN ARIZONA
Arizona is different.
Our extreme heat, hard water, year-round pool operation, monsoon dust, and heavy summer use put pool filters and filtration equipment through conditions they simply don’t experience in many other parts of the country.
That means your cartridge filters, DE grids, and filter sand may need to be replaced more frequently here.
And no—we don’t acid soak filter cartridges to squeeze more life out of exhausted filter media.
HARD WATER + EVAPORATION
Arizona has notoriously hard water.
During our hottest months, swimming pools lose a significant amount of water to evaporation. Every time the pool refills, additional minerals are introduced into the water.
The water evaporates.
The calcium doesn’t.
Over time, calcium hardness and mineral buildup can accumulate throughout the pool—including inside your filtration system.
Once filter media becomes heavily scaled, cleaning alone may no longer restore proper performance.
Our philosophy is simple:
If filter media is compromised beyond a proper professional cleaning, replace it. Don’t chemically force more life out of it.
THERE IS NO REAL OFF-SEASON
In many colder climates, swimming pools are winterized and equipment sits dormant for months.
Not in Arizona.

THEN MONSOON SEASON SHOWS UP
If you live here, you already know.
One minute your backyard is clean.
Twenty minutes later, half the desert appears to be in your swimming pool.
Arizona monsoons and dust storms can introduce enormous amounts of fine dust, dirt, organic debris, and contaminants into the water.
Much of that ultimately ends up where it should:
In your filter.
That’s why a filter that was operating normally before monsoon season can experience a noticeable increase in pressure or decrease in flow after repeated storms.
Don’t ignore the pressure gauge.
Your pool is trying to tell you something.

Now add summer.
Warm water. Heavy swimming. Sunscreen. Lotions. Body oils. Dirt. Landscaping debris.
Your filtration system is responsible for capturing what doesn’t belong in the water.
Those contaminants accumulate inside cartridge pleats and DE grids and contribute to the overall loading of the filter.
That’s why simply spraying off what you can see isn’t always enough.
A filter can look clean and still be reaching the end of its useful service life.
RESTRICTION AFFECTS THE ENTIRE SYSTEM
A dirty or restricted swimming pool filter isn’t just a cosmetic maintenance issue.
Restricted filtration can reduce water flow and negatively affect:

If you have to run your variable-speed pump faster or longer to achieve the circulation you should be getting at a lower speed, you’re spending money compensating for a problem.

WHY STAY FRESH DOESN’T ACID SOAK FILTER MEDIA
We clean filter cartridges properly.
We inspect the pleats, bands, end caps, grids, internal components, filter tank, O-rings, pressure gauge, and overall condition of the system.
But we do not acid soak cartridges.
When mineral loading, deterioration, or damage has reached the point where normal professional cleaning can no longer restore acceptable performance, our recommendation is simple:
Replace the filter media.
Cartridges get replaced. DE grids get replaced. Filter sand gets replaced.
Especially in the Arizona environment.
We would rather install healthy filter media than chemically stretch compromised media another season.

What We Do
1. Pressure reading first, against your clean baseline. If you do not have one, we set one.
2. Full teardown. Cartridges out, or grids out and inspected individually. We look at every one. This is where torn grids, cracked manifolds, collapsed pleats, and bad o-rings get found, and it is the reason a clean is also a diagnostic.
3. Degrease, then acid, in that order, with proper dwell time. Not a rinse in your driveway.
4. Reassembly, recharge, and a new baseline written down and handed to you.
5. We tell you when it is done. A cartridge that is deformed, permanently gray, or will not hold its pleats open is finished, and no soak is bringing it back. We will say so rather than take your money to clean something that needs replacing.
6. No contract. One clean, or put it on a schedule with weekly service so you never think about it again.
