Read This Before You Replace a Motor
The rules changed and most people have not heard.
For years, the standard cheap fix on a dead pump was to leave the wet end in place and bolt on a new single-speed motor. As of September 29, 2025, that is no longer legal for most residential pool pumps. Federal DOE efficiency standards now require that replacement pump motors at or above 1.15 THP be variable-speed. Most 1.5 and 2 horsepower pumps sitting in East Valley backyards are at or above that threshold.
In plain terms: if your single-speed motor dies and it is a typical 1.5 or 2 HP unit, you cannot swap in another single-speed motor. The next step is a variable-speed pump.
A few things this does not mean:
- You do not have to replace a working pump. If your single-speed pump runs, keep running it. Nobody is coming for it.
- You can still repair it. Seals, o-rings, baskets, lids, impellers, diffusers, unions, and capacitors are all still fair game. The restriction is on motor replacement, not on repair.
- This is federal, not an Arizona thing. You cannot shop around it, and any company telling you they can source you a single-speed motor is telling you something you should think about.
The rule extends down to smaller motors in the 0.5 to 1.15 THP range in September 2027.
We are not thrilled about telling people their cheap repair got more expensive. We would rather tell you now than after you have paid for a diagnostic somewhere that quotes you a motor they cannot legally install.

We don’t throw parts at problems. We check electrical, flow, filtration, the wet end, seal plate, plumbing, and the overall equipment system. Sometimes a “pump problem” is actually a filter or flow problem. We find the cause before recommending the fix.

3. WE REPAIR WITH LONGEVITY IN MIND.
Here’s the thing—we’re not interested in selling you a quick repair that buys a little more time without providing real long-term value. That’s why we do not replace pump capacitors. If an aging pump is beginning to experience electrical or mechanical failures, we’ll evaluate the entire unit and recommend the solution that makes the most sense for its condition, efficiency, expected lifespan, and your investment.
Sometimes that means repairing. Sometimes that means upgrading. Either way, we’ll explain why.
4. WE SIZE AND PROGRAM EQUIPMENT PROPERLY.
Installing a variable-speed pump and leaving it on factory settings isn’t an efficiency upgrade—it’s an unfinished job. Your pump should be sized and programmed around your pool’s actual volume, plumbing, filtration, features, and turnover requirements. Proper programming helps maximize efficiency, performance, and equipment longevity.
